World Autism Acceptance Month April 2025: tips from Verbo

It’s the final week of World Autism Acceptance Month! This week’s theme is self-advocacy, so we’re sharing strategies that can support autistic learners with the ability to communicate and stand up for their differences, interests and rights.

Build a communication profileCreate a sensory mapUse visual frameworks to hear pupil voice
Capture what makes each learner them on one page — their strengthsareas of difference and what helps them thrive. It’s a great way to make sure everyone understands how to best support them.

Watch how to do this here.
Identify what helps pupils feel calm, focused and safe — and what might lead to discomfort or distress. A sensory map can offer powerful insights to shape supportive environments and routines.

Here’s an example from the Autism Education Trust’s Self-Advocacy Toolkit.
Visuals can help learners share how they feel, what they need, what matters to them and help them feel valued — whether for annual reviews, target setting, communication passports or safeguarding.
