👦 Meet Leo
Name: Leo Johnson
Age: 7 years old
School: Parkside Academy
Stage: Year 2

Background
Leo is a friendly, enthusiastic boy in year 2 in school. He enjoys practical, hands-on activities such as building and construction tasks as well as physical activities like PE and Forest School sessions. He is popular and well-liked by his peers. He’s always been ‘a bit behind’ with his communication, particularly understanding instructions and expressing himself clearly and coherently. Recently, he’s been finding it more difficult to keep up and stay focused during lessons. And although he’s always interacted well with his peers, there’s been a few instances of conflict recently whereby he’s become frustrated that his peers haven’t understood his ideas during play.
What Leo’s teacher has noticed in the classroom
- Leo finds it difficult to stay focused during teacher-led tasks. He is often distracted during the explanation of a task and therefore later struggles to complete the work that has been set.
- Leo often seems confused when given instructions, especially if there’s more than one step. Sometimes adults have to repeat things several times or explain them differently before he understands.
- He has lots of creative ideas when doing tasks he enjoys, but struggles to explain them clearly to others and can get frustrated when people don’t understand what he means.
- Leo sometimes seems to misunderstand what is being asked or what others are saying, which has led to conflicts with his peers.
