🎯 Targeted Support: Completing a Screener & Selecting Targets

After noticing some concerns around Jackson’s development, the room leader decided to complete a screener to see if there were any speech, language and communication needs. Follow the steps below to see how you would add, screen and select targets for a child on Verbo.

Step 1: Create a profile for Jackson

You can create profiles for all children you think would benefit from some targeted speech and language support. Once you have created the profiles you can also add parent accounts so they can access specific resources at home.

Step 2: Complete the screener

After creating the child’s profile, you can select an age-appropriate screener to complete. In the video below, you will see the room leader completing a screener for Jackson. The series of questions require yes/no answers that are broken down by different areas of need.

A screener takes about 20 minutes to complete and will identify if the child has any targets for speech, language and communication, and occupational therapy.

Step 3: Select targets

Once the screener has been completed, you can select up to 3 targets to work on. The targets are ordered by priority to make it quicker and easier when choosing them.

In Jackson’s situation, the room leader met with the SENCo and his parents to go through the screener results. Together they decided to activate the following targets:
1. To follow an instruction containing 2 keywords e.g. “give the apple to the horse”, in a structured activity
2. To use a 2-word spontaneous phrase, e.g. “baby sleeping”, to comment on their play
3. To show understanding of basic emotions, e.g. angry, happy, sad, with adult and visual support in a structured activity

Watch the video below to see the type of targets that have been identified and how to activate them.

Now the room leader and SENCo know what support Jackson needs and what targets they are working on, they can both go away and watch the videos and resources Verbo recommends to achieve the targets.

If you are concerned about a child’s development and think it could be linked to their communication and language development, you can complete a Verbo screener to identify any potential needs. This will support you to learn what type of help is required, how you can make a start, and consider whether any onward referrals to specialist services are required.
