🎯 Targeted Support: Completing a Screener & Selecting Targets

After noticing some concerns around Jenna’s communication and interaction with peers, her tutor decided to complete a screener to see if there were any speech, language and communication needs. Follow the steps below to see how you would add, screen and select targets for a young person on Verbo.

Step 1: Create a profile for Jenna

You can create profiles for all young people you think would benefit from some targeted speech and language support. If the young person is 16 years or older, you can also set them up with their own login and access to Verbo. This will allow them to complete their own screener and access resources themselves.

Step 2: Complete a staff screener

After creating the young person’s profile, you can select an age-appropriate screener to complete. In the video below, you will see the tutor completing a screener for Jenna. The series of questions require yes/no answers that are broken down by different areas of need.

A screener takes about 20 minutes to complete and will identify if the young person has any targets for speech, language and communication.

Step 3: Support Jenna to complete her own screener

When Jenna’s profile has been created, she will receive login details for her own account. The student login is a restricted version of the staff account and includes access to a student screener, active targets and young person resources linked to the targets and a view of all completed targets.

Step 4: Select targets

Once the screener has been completed, you can select up to 3 targets to work on. The targets are ordered by priority to make it quicker and easier when choosing them.

In Jenna’s situation, she and her tutor sat down together to look through the screeners. Together they decided to activate the following targets:
1. To set my own goals for the future
2. To work with others as part of a team
3. To use a diary or calendar to plan my time, organise myself and meet my deadlines
