🎯 Targeted Support: Completing a Screener & Selecting Targets

After teachers raised concerns about Michael, his form tutor decided to complete a screener to see if there were any speech, language and communication needs. Follow the steps below to see how you could add, screen and select targets for a student on Verbo.

Step 1: Create a profile for Michael

You can create profiles for all students you think would benefit from some targeted speech and language support. Once you have created the profiles you can also add parent accounts so they can access specific resources at home.

Step 2: Complete a screener

After creating the student’s profile, you can select an age-appropriate screener to complete. In the video below, you will see the tutor completing a screener for Michael. The series of questions require yes/no answers that are broken down by different areas of need.

A screener takes about 20 minutes to complete and will identify if the student has any targets for speech, language and communication..

Step 3: Select targets

Once the screener has been completed, you can select up to 3 targets to work on. The targets are ordered by priority to make it quicker and easier when choosing them.

For Michael, the SENCO met with his form tutor and his parents to go through the screener results. Together they decided to activate the following targets:
1. To attend to individual learning tasks in the classroom using visual support
2. To identify the barrier to their understanding (e.g. length of instruction, unfamiliar word, pace) and request the specific help needed in the classroom
3. To demonstrate understanding of other people’s perspectives in specific social scenarios within their every day experience
